The Jordan Valley is an elongated geographical depression located within both Israel and Jordan. This geographic region spans the entire length of the Jordan River – from the Sea of Galilee, crossing through the Jordan Valley, the Dead Sea, the lowest land elevation on Earth –and then continues through the Aravah Desert, all the way to the Red Sea, near the Egyptian border. The Jordan Valley, located north of the Dead Sea, has long been a site of prosperous agricultural growth, thanks to the river’s steady stream and the numerous springs located throughout the valley’s flanks.

John the Baptist lived there for about 20 years and resided in a cave on Elijah’s Hill. The site and the surrounding area were favored by many prophets and became a Pilgrimage Station on the early Pilgrimage Trail. Its strategic location between Jerusalem and the King’s Highway is already evident from the Book of Joshua. The book tells the story of the Israelites as they crossed the Jordan River into the Land of Canaan at that exact location, and is identified as the site of the Prophet Elijah’s ascension to heaven.
